Since 2015, Leung has organized events with the vision that artists, designers, dreamers, and community members alike could support the arts in a mutually beneficial way. At the first event, Leung raised over $3,000 and welcomed more than 500 patrons, who also participated in hands-on workshops. The funds helped cover materials and venues for ongoing art initiatives. Some of Leung’s favourite fun and free workshops included tie-dye, sticker making, and kite making. These early projects laid the foundation for broader engagement in community arts. Leung was later invited to teach at the Art Gallery of Ontario, helped to develop the youth program Free After Three, creating playful DIY art projects that allowed students to explore creativity and express their passion for the arts. In recent years, Leung’s practice has focused primarily on community-engaged art and inclusive programming, with a particular emphasis on youth. While Coupe de Coeur has concluded, its legacy lives on through the workshops, community connections, and creative opportunities it helped foster. Thank you to all who supported Coupe de Coeur. To spark interest and draw people into the space, Leung performed a live squeegee painting demonstration on stage, transforming the act of painting into a public spectacle. The demonstration immediately captured attention, drawing crowds to the tables where participants eagerly joined in, discovering the joy and accessibility of painting through unconventional tools and Food For Thought was designed as an accessible art-making experience where participants used provided table mat templates, drawing, and collage materials to create visual representations of their favourite dishes. This project was adapted from the original workshop developed for Visual Arts Mississauga, transforming three-dimensional sculptures into two-dimensional collage art to better suit the group. Featuring student artworks in the space supports reflection, visibility, and confidence, reinforcing a sense of belonging and pride in their creative contributions. Leung relaunched Kids Art &amp; Action Space (KAAS) and Youth Art &amp; Action Space (YAAS), free drop-in programs offering mixed media arts and movement-based activities for youth ages 6-9 and 10-14, respectively. When stacked together, these crates formed a multi-sided sculptural mural—like the interconnected roots of a forest, representing how individual actions and acknowledgments come together to create something larger than themselves. For Leung, a settler living on Turtle Island, this project offered an opportunity to show up in solidarity with Indigenous peoples by creating space for youth to engage meaningfully with the land and their responsibilities to it. This initiative led to the creation of Yue Moon 2020 and two distinct projects for Yue Moon 完滿: Tiger With Wings 如虎添翼 and the award-winning Yue Moon: Animated Light / 圓滿：舞動 with animation led by Winnie Troung. In its third year, Yue Moon 完滿 continues to bring people together for a bright, uplifting public art experience—a creative escape from the winter's darkness and cold. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I reimagined the project to engage participants online, making it accessible while maintaining the spirit of collaboration and creativity. Participants were invited to design artwork for the lantern panels from home, using materials they could easily gather. Meegan and I demonstrated simple art techniques through online workshops, guiding participants to create designs inspired by the zodiac signs while learning about East Asian arts and cultural traditions. Submissions were collected digitally, and each piece was carefully printed and affixed to its own panel. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, I worked with a small team to construct the lanterns and assemble the panels into a unified installation. This process balanced technical care with artistic vision, allowing the lanterns to shine as both a collaborative artwork and a symbol of connection. Individual sculptures range from 2 to 60 cm in width Food For Thought emerged from a period of collective pause and uncertainty as communities began to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, Paddy Leung became deeply interested in how care, connection, and belonging are practiced in everyday life—particularly through food. Food holds emotional, social, and cultural significance; it carries memory, identity, and love, and often becomes a site where care is both expressed and received. This project was developed as a community-based workshop in collaboration with Visual Arts Mississauga, inviting participants of all ages to reimagine their favourite dishes using art-making, craft processes, and recycled materials. Through hands-on creation, participants were encouraged to reflect on their personal relationships with food, share cultural traditions and stories, and translate these experiences into playful, sculptural forms. By centering making as a shared experience, Food For Thought positions food as a language of connection and care. The project culminated in a public exhibition at VAM Gallery on November 21, 2021, bringing individual narratives together into a collective table—one that celebrates creativity, community, and the community connection. During the COVID-19 pandemic, creating art programming that was accessible, safe, and responsive to community needs became especially important. In October 2021, as part of The Bentway’s Community Incubation Program, a platform that supports artists in testing new ideas through public-facing, community-centered projects. Paddy Leung developed a series of hybrid initiatives that activated the site through creative, low-barrier engagement. Kindness Rocks was a temporary public art project designed to foster gentle connection, joy, and play. The installation invited people of all ages to interact with a growing rock garden by painting, trading, or contributing rocks over the course of a month. Through playful participation and shared care, Kindness Rocks demonstrated how public art can create inclusive, affirming spaces that support both individual expression and collective belonging.
