In celebration of the Lunar New Year, a collaborative public art installation that engaged an intergenerational community of participants and resulted in a public artwork viewed by thousands. The Chinatown BIA had approached STEPS Public Art to develop a public art program to foster community and to improve awareness of the local businesses within Chinatown. Paddy Leung was the lead facilitator artist who designed and developed 4 free intergenerational community art programs at 3 different locations: Ceil Community Centre, Chinese Gospel Church and Tea Base for hosting the workshops.
The outcome was amazing, we had over 100 community members participating in the workshop and made over 🏮️250 lanterns. All lanterns were displayed at the Dragon City Mall front entrance and the second-floor hallway.

Artist Statement
Yue Moon was inspired by my connection to Lunar New Year and the memories it has created in my life. Growing up at my parents’ home, I remember lighting paper lanterns and sharing large festive meals with family and friends. These
moments were filled with joy and togetherness. When my relatives moved back to Hong Kong, celebrating Lunar New Year in the city felt different, but Chinatown became a second home for me. This project allowed me to reconnect with my roots while making new memories of what Lunar New Year means as an adult.
The installation combined traditional paper lantern forms with a contemporary aesthetic. I used colorful, reflective decorative paper, circular mirrors, and gold tassels to create movement and light. Circular motifs throughout referenced the moon, while long tassels danced in the wind, animating the space. Participants of all ages assembled and decorated their own lanterns, which were then gathered into a large-scale installation at Dragon City Mall, spanning the entrance and second floor hallway.
Yue Moon celebrates heritage, intergenerational creativity, and community. It invites participants and viewers alike to engage, reflect, and find joy in shared cultural traditions.
